Both, the book launch (March 15: 2:30 PM - 4:30 PM) and the accompanying exhibition JATB (March 10 to April 12) can be visited in Cultuurhuis de Lindenberg in Nijmegen.

Just another trouble bubble
Freedom or s(l)avety?

These times require a redefinition of the concept of freedom: how to live together without completely handing ourselves over to that society. Are we still in charge of ourselves? Or will technology take over? What remains of our humanity? Our imperfection, self-respect, autonomy? Artist Joris van Merwijk rightly asks these current questions, in images, text and design. The book draws you into the confusing unclear state of being, of man in his self-created control society in which nothing escapes the eye of the camera. Inflated fear apparently justifies a society under extensive surveillance. But do we want that? Should we accept that? Joris shows himself vulnerable, with handwritten texts, sometimes almost childlike drawings, as a humane contrast to the harsh reality. It is precisely these types of art books that are able to critically approach our existence and require a new perspective, self-criticism. That is the power of good art, art that leads to a reconsideration of values.

Deze tijd vraagt om een herdefiniëring van het begrip vrijheid: hoe samen te leven zonder onszelf geheel over te leveren aan die samenleving. Zijn wij nog de baas over onszelf? Of neemt de technologie het over? Wat blijft er over van onze menselijkheid? Onze imperfectie, zelfrespect, autonomie? Terecht stelt kunstenaar Joris van Merwijk deze actuele vragen, in beeld, tekst en vormgeving. Het boek sleept je mee in de verwarrende, onduidelijke zijnstoestand van de mens in zijn zelfgecreëerde controlemaatschappij waarin niets het oog van de camera ontloopt. Opgeklopte angst rechtvaardigt blijkbaar een samenleving onder vergaand toezicht. Maar willen we dat? Moeten we dat accepteren? Joris toont zich kwetsbaar, met handgeschreven teksten, soms bijna kinderlijke tekeningen, als humaan contrast met de harde werkelijkheid. Juist dit soort kunstboeken zijn in staat ons bestaan kritisch te benaderen en vragen om een nieuw perspectief, om zelfkritiek. Dat is de kracht van goede kunst, kunst die leidt tot een herbezinning van waarden.
