Very happy to share that Just Another Trouble Bubble has been selected as a winner of AIGA 50 Books | 50 Covers 2025/26.

For the cover, digital pointillism creates an almost chaotic field that becomes the ground for the title. Beneath a thin outer sheet, the largely hidden cover reveals the locations of surveillance cameras in some of the world’s most highly surveilled cities. A restrained use of silver foil adds a subtle layer of precision to the design.
The jury highlighted these choices as part of what made the book stand out.

It’s an honour to see this project recognised by AIGA and included among this year’s winning books.

In a world where technology is becoming increasingly dominant, author and artist Joris van Merwijk raises critical questions in his new book, Just Another Trouble Bubble, about the impact of digital developments on fundamental human rights. The book highlights how technology infringes on our privacy, undermines property rights, and restricts personal freedoms and responsibilities.

The book calls for a reassessment of the concept of freedom: how can we live together without completely surrendering ourselves to the digital world? Are we still in control of our own lives, or is technology taking over? What remains of our humanity?

Van Merwijk explores how developments such as mass surveillance, big data, and artificial intelligence bring not only opportunities but also significant risks. This art book offers a visually compelling and critical perspective on how corporations and governments use technology to gain control and limit our freedom—without considering the long-term consequences. Through striking photographs, illustrations, thought-provoking questions, and concise essays, Van Merwijk urges a renewed appreciation of our rights in an era where digital technology is increasingly intertwined with our daily lives. With this new project, he sets the stage for a much-needed debate. The book’s distinctive and resonant design was created by designer Sophie van Kempen.
